Leesburg got another home décor store this week when Kirkland’s opened in Battlefield Shopping Center Wednesday morning, and soon can add a Big Lots! and a Hobby Lobby to its array of retail options.

Wednesday was the start of Kirkland’s soft opening before its formal grand opening celebration from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 13.

The store, at 1043 Edwards Ferry Road NE, is Kirkland’s second location in Loudoun County. The other store is located in the Dulles Town Center. It’s Kirkland’s 11th location in Virginia.

“The Leesburg community will appreciate the style and incredible value our stores offer,” Michelle Graul, senior vice president of stores, said in a statement, “as well as our continued dedication to making every experience special.”

Kirkland’s is one of a handful of stores to fill vacancies in the Battlefield Shopping Center this spring. Five Guys Burgers and Fries and Sweetz Bakery have opened, and Big Lots! is preparing to open, posting signs to hire workers. Messages to Big Lots! representatives have not been returned.

Kirkland’s is occupying the old Gold’s Gym space, which Leesburg Economic Development Director Marantha Edwards said has been closed for approximately two and a half years.

“The economy is getting better,” Edwards said of the renewed activity in Battlefield Shopping Center. “I had heard this from the real estate community. It was going to take the economy getting better before the larger retailers felt comfortable.”

Less than a mile away on Fort Evans Road, Hobby Lobby will be occupying the former Bloom grocery store location near The Home Depot. Hobby Lobby applied for a building permit earlier this year and has posted the location as “opening soon” on its website.

Welcome to the discussion.

What a misleading headline! What comeback is the headline writer referring to? Retail businesses in Leesburg seem to be thriving, even in the perpetually depressed old central business district. Perhaps Battlefield Shopping Center has had more vacancies than other destinations.
