Residents at the Ashby Ponds Senior Living Community celebrated their green thumbs Tuesday during the annual garden open house.
Now in its third year, the event showcases 38 meticulously maintained garden plots, containing practically every flower and vegetable imaginable.
"I think we could feed the entire community with the amount of tomatoes we've got this year," Executive Assistant Debbie Cannatella said, marveling at the huge number of ripening fruits.
Aside from tomatoes, gorgeous zinnias, marigolds and other colorful flowers overflowed from the beds. Everyone on hand Tuesday spoke with reverence of one man's plot, which featured four corn stalks measured at around 10-feet high and growing. The seeds came from relatives in Iowa, and it seemed the entire community couldn't wait to see what the giant plants would yield, and if seed could be collected for next year.
Ashby Ponds has plans to expand the community garden in the near future, perhaps to as many as 100 plots. That comes alongside expansion of the community itself—construction is already underway on several more units.
