Although a body was found in the Potomac River south of White’s Ferry this weekend, the Leesburg Police Department is continuing its search for a missing 70-year-old man pending any connections between the two cases.
According to Leesburg Police, Peter C. Daley was picked up by a taxi from the Red Cab company around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 26, and taken from the Morningside Assisted Living Facility to White’s Ferry. He was dropped off at approximately 7:45 p.m. It is not known whether he crossed the Potomac River using the ferry.
Daley suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. He did not take his cell phone and wallet when he left his residence.
Capt. Paul Starks with the Montgomery County Police Department said around 10 a.m. Saturday, July 28, a boater saw what he believed was a body floating in the Potomac River near White’s Ferry. The boater called 9-1-1 and Montgomery County police and detectives responded to the scene. The Montgomery County Police Department is investigating because it has jurisdiction over the river.
Starks said the body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office in Baltimore and they expect a report by the end of Monday. He said the detectives were not releasing the approximate age of the victim because of the changes that occur to a body when it is in the water. He would confirm it was an adult male wearing blue athletic pants.
"There was no trauma to the body,” he added.
Until there is an identification on the man found in the Potomac River and it is connected to Daley’s disappearance, the Leesburg Police Department is continuing its search for the elderly man, Master Police Officer Christopher Tidmore said.
“At this time we cannot merge these two cases together in any way,” Tidmore said Monday. “We continue to actively look for our missing person.”
Tidmore and Starks both confirmed the two jurisdictions are in communication on the cases.
Daley is described as a white male, 5’10” tall and weighing approximately 140 pounds. He has blue eyes and wears glasses. He has brown graying hair. He was last seen wearing a red polo shirt, black slacks with white socks and sandals.
Anyone who has seen Daley or has information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Leesburg Police Department immediately at 703-771-4500. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call 703-443-TIPS.
