The anticipated announcement of the grocery store chain that will make its home at the One Loudoun development is Ashburn is here.

The Fresh Market, a specialty grocery store "focused on providing high-quality products in a unique and inviting atmosphere," announced today it would become an anchor tenant in One Loudoun. The announcement continues The Fresh Market's growth in Northern Virginia. The Ashburn location will the 10th in Virginia, but the first in Loudoun County.

“We are excited about our continued expansion in the Mid-Atlantic, and in Northern Virginia in particular,” Randy Kelley, senior vice president of real estate and development for The Fresh Market, said in a statement. “We look forward to building on the success of our other locations in the area, where we have enjoyed a strong and loyal customer base, and to providing customers in Loudoun County with the same quality products and excellent customer service.”

The Fresh Market representatives say the store prides itself on its reputation for being an "extraordinary food destination store." The stores include bakeries, full-service meat counters, fresh seafood, a wide cheese selections, and extensive produce sections.

“From bountiful produce and a full-service meat counter to convenient prepared foods and an in-store bakery,” Craig Carlock, the company’s president and CEO, stated, “customers will discover that our stores are committed to variety, freshness and value as well as superior customer service.”

For One Loudoun, part of the draw to The Fresh Market was the company’s commitment to community. Local stores are known for getting involved in the communities where they operate, bringing in jobs, selling locally-produced goods, and supporting local organizations that are important to the stores’ customers, according to One Loudoun. "We think we are like-minded companies," Bill May, vice president of Miller and Smith, One Loudoun's developer, said.

The plans for permitting were submitted to the county last week, May said, bringing to an important step a process that has been ongoing for more than a year. Miller and Smith plans to put the project out to bid and hopes to start construction next month. The goal is to have the grocery store open by the fall.

May said he believes The Fresh Market is a good fit for One Loudoun.

"I think with the demographics that we have in the eastern Loudoun, in the Ashburn area, we think that The Fresh Market is perfect for the people who live here," he said. "I tihnk it is time to bring them a grocer that hasn’t previously existed in the county that fits what they are looking for."

Founded in 1982, The Fresh Market, Inc. operates 129 stores in 25 states, primarily located in the Southeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. For more information, please visit

Fresh Market is definitely better than TJ in my opinion. Very much like Whole Foods. Perfect for a 1 Loudoun, easy walking community. Prepared foods, and products in general, are great. Different from Wegs in many ways. They will be a hit!

Agree Mas. Trader Joes would be perfect for Ashburn or Leesburg. Maybe a Whole Foods would make it so I don't need to go to Wegmans at the crack of dawn in order to avoid gridlock in the aisles. I've never heard of Fresh Market.

Is Fresh Market as good as Whole Foods and Trader Joe's? I wish Loudoun would bring either WF and/or TJ here!!!
