Update: The road reopened to traffic shortly before 11 a..m.

Rt. 15 just north of Leesburg is closed to traffic in both directions as crews work on the scene of a  crash and a downed utility pole.

The crash happened just before 9 a.m. at the Rt. 15/Whites Ferry Road intersection. Rt. 15 is closed between Whites Ferry Road and Selma Lane.

Welcome to the discussion.

There's nothing magical about being a Virginia Byway - it can be improved, widened, re-aligned as evidenced by Route 15 south of Leesburg or Route 7 west. Or Route 15 near I-66. Etc. Etc. Etc.
The main traffic problems are from the narrowing from 2 lanes to 1, the dangerous merge with business 15, and up to the light at Raspberry Falls. Widening that segment to 2 lanes would offer meaningful relief. Widening the bridge and route 15 into Maryland is inevitable.

I didn't say keeping it two lanes was/is a good idea...just why it won't be more. Typically no one wants a multi-lane highway through their neighborhood. The Rt. 15 folks had/have the clout to make it happen or rather not happen.

Prevent Route 15 from "becoming" a thoroughfare? You do see the irony, right?

    A) Why would it matter? Traffic in Leesburg will be lessened enough by moving the merge area further north.

    B) Build a second bridge. Oh wait, all our tax dollars go to support Syrian rebels and the Afghans and Iraqis to rebuild their countries. Ok, you're right never mind. haha

Rat. 15, like Rat. 193 in Great Falls, has been designated a "Virginia by-way" which essentially means that there can be no significant improvements to them, such as additional lanes. This designation is primarily at the behest of wealthy landowners in the area whose major concern is preventing thoroughfares through their neighborhoods.

Then what are you going to do when you get to the 2-lane bridge over the Potomac?
